Picking the right system for a Geelong house
Geelong asks a lot of a heating and cooling system. Summer brings a run of days over 35 degrees with a hot northerly behind them, then a cool change drops the temperature fifteen degrees in an afternoon. Winter is not severe by national standards, but it is long, damp and grey, and a house that faces the wrong way or has no ceiling insulation feels colder than the thermometer says.
Reverse cycle split systems
One indoor head serving one room or open living area. The cheapest way to make a room comfortable and the most efficient heating you can buy.
Ducted reverse cycle
One unit in the roof, outlets in every room, one controller. Zoning lets you shut the bedrooms off during the day.
Multi head systems
Two to five indoor heads off one outdoor unit. Useful where ducting is impossible or ceilings cannot be cut into.
Evaporative cooling
Cooling only, using water and outside air. Cheap to run and it moves a lot of air, but it struggles on humid days and does nothing in winter.
Hydronic heating
Hot water through panel radiators or in slab pipework. Quiet, even, no draughts and no fan noise. Popular in renovated older homes.
Going all electric
Replacing gas heating and hot water with reverse cycle and a heat pump. Usually the cheapest running cost, and where most Victorian rebates point.
What actually happens on a quote
We measure the house, not the plan
Room by room: glazing area and orientation, ceiling height, insulation in the roof and walls, how the rooms connect, and which spaces you actually use. West facing glass in Geelong is the single biggest load we see.
We check what the switchboard can take
Plenty of Geelong homes still have a board with no spare capacity, no RCD protection on the circuit we need, or aluminium consumer mains. Better to find that before the install day than on it.

Why two quotes for the same house differ
When you compare quotes, most of the difference is not margin. It is in these five things, and it is worth checking that every quote you hold covers them the same way.
Capacity and model tier
An entry level 7.1kW unit and a premium inverter 7.1kW unit do the same job on paper. The premium one holds temperature better at the extremes, runs quieter and draws less power doing it. Cheap quotes are often cheap because of what is in the box.
Electrical work
A dedicated circuit, a switchboard upgrade or new consumer mains can add a meaningful amount. Some quotes leave it out and raise it on the day. Ours states it.
Access and pipe runs
Double storey work, tile roofs, tight roof cavities, long refrigerant runs and units that need craning all add labour. So does a house on stumps with no subfloor clearance.
Rebate paperwork
Where a Victorian Energy Upgrades rebate applies, the discount only exists if the job is done by an approved provider and documented correctly. We handle that application ourselves rather than leaving it with you.

What is the difference between a split system and ducted air conditioning?
A split system heats and cools one room or one open area from a single indoor head. Ducted runs one larger unit in the roof space and pushes air through ducts to every room. Splits cost less and let you run only the room you are in. Ducted costs more, disappears into the ceiling, and is the better answer for whole house comfort. The deciding factor is usually roof space and how many rooms need to be comfortable at once.
Is reverse cycle cheaper to run than gas heating in Geelong?
In most cases yes. A modern reverse cycle system returns roughly three to five units of heat for every unit of electricity, because it moves heat rather than making it. Gas is capped at its combustion efficiency, and supply charges keep climbing. The gap widens again with solar on the roof. The exact saving depends on your tariff and insulation, so we work it out on your numbers.
Do I need to replace my whole system or can it be repaired?
It depends on age, refrigerant type and what has failed. A ten year old unit with a failed capacitor is worth repairing. A twenty year old unit running R22, no longer imported into Australia, usually is not. We give you the repair cost and the replacement cost side by side and let you decide.
How long does an installation take?
A straightforward back to back split is a half day. A long pipe run or a second storey can take most of a day. A ducted system in an existing home is normally two days, sometimes three. Evaporative and hydronic vary more, so we give you a day count with the quote.
